How to allow DVD input when car is moving ??

Post  StanS on Sat Aug 07, 2010 7:50 am

I've seen the answer somewhere but cannot find where.
The HKS Camp2 monitor system works great with handbrake on and stationary, so what do you have to do with the handbrake wiring to allow the DVD screen/input to work when moving ?
Is there anything else to do/disable ?
Cheers

remove the headunit from the dash, Locate the wire which is a parking brake feed and connect it to earth straight from the headunit.

if i get time on monday I'll locate the colour of the wire that you need to earth out

Cheers Rob Smile
OK, time for really thick questions confused Trying to understand how it works !

1. So are you saying connect the wire from the handbrake directly to earth/chassis ? or disconnect the wire from the hbrake to the unit and connect a wire from the unit to chassis ?

2. Can't the wire from the handbrake just be disconnected from the unit ?

3. Is the wire from the handbrake giving the unit a 12V or 0V signal so it can tell if brake is on/off ? If so, won't earthing the wire short something when at 12V ?

confused

connect the handbrake wire from the headunit direct to earth, That means cutting it in two and insulate the wire from the cars loom so it doesnt come into contact with anything.

if you just dissconnect the wire from the hanbrake you'll find it still wont function.

the wire from the handbrake needs cutting that goes into the headunit and insulated but allow enough wire coming outta the headunit still so you can ground this out.

the reason being the handbrake system runs on an earth circuit not a live.

dont think i'm explaining this very well sorry for any confusion lol

Thanks Rob Smile
I just wanted to be sure I did the correct thing !
So the unit need a 0V feed to fool it into thinking the hbrake is on !
Excellent.
May try that tomorrow if not raining.

Just thought I'd also ask (!) how to remove head unit - I know how to get trim off etc, but is there a trick to removing the unit from the dash ? or is it obvious when its exposed ?

basically what i was trying to say was the when the hanbrake is on it sends and earth signal to the headunit to allow the dvd to work so if you cut the wire from the headunit and earth it out the dvd will work, but make sure the other half of the wire which still goes to the hanbrake is insualted outta the way of anything.

I wish you goodluck trying to find the wire because there all different colours and striped and colour coded in such a way it makes it very hard work, I had issues hardwiring a parrot handsfree kit in as they dont make an adapter harness for them yet Rolling Eyes

the trim around the headunit just unclips, Start with the middle of the trim on the drivers side of it and just pull in a clockwise motion, then once thats off the headunit is just screwed into the dash with 6 screws. You'll find something else hidden in there too ontop of the headunit, you'll see what i mean lol!

Many thanks Rob Very Happy Very Happy
Wonder how hard it is to look under the handbrake to see if I can match a colour wire at the hbrake and unit ? OR
I think I may well wimp out here and hope you get a chance on Monday to find out the colour code of the wire I need. Laughing Embarassed

the gaitor around the handbrake slides towards the drivers seat and pulls up in a fashion, not sure if you can see the switch though lol I'll go and have a look

haha I try my best lol!
No worries at all cheers

Up and over 1600 miles now and still going well, had a slight hiccup with some tesco 99 which resulted in me resetting the ecu with the SSM III, and its been ok ever since.

Hows yours running ?

Its running very nicely but only mapped at 1.2 bar flat. Only driven it loaded with luggage and not tried a hard 1st-2nd-3rd blast yet, but goes well 50+. Very Happy

Ssm iii. Is the Subaru select monitor 3

Handbrake switch is located infront of the handbrake lever.

Grey wire does go up to the headunit and connects on pin a4 on the headunit, don't disconnect from the switch as it's linked the ecu all work must be done up at the headunit

Cheers, Rob. Thanks for the technical details.
Very Happy
Still don't understand why, if we are going to cut the gey wire anyway, it can't be done at the handbrake end. Does the grey wire connect to something else before reaching the head unit ? confused

If it needs to be done at the head unit, its a more skilful job than I can do Crying or Very sad

Will have to pay to get it done.

the grey wire is linked to the cars main ecu before it reaches the headunit and also is used for the dccd & dashboard.

If its just disconnected at the handbrake end it enables the diff to free wheel so in effect becomes 2 wheel drive Shocked Shocked Shocked

I'll have another look tomorrow and see if I can spot which connector a4 is on.

Fallback plan is I'll visit a "mate" at my local Scoob garage and see how big a drink he wants to do it ! Embarassed

Thanks Rob. Very Happy
When I disconnected the connectors from the unit, I thought there were about10-15 wires going to one connector and about 8-10 to the other !!
With only 4-5 that would be easier ! Rolling Eyes

Hey guys - so does this fix actually work ? Question

With the hand brake on or off I can still see the video, it cuts out at 5mph i.e when you get moving more than a crawl.

So does this have some sort of movement detector in it somwhere ?

There is an optional reversing camera which switches the DVD screen to show what's behind.
I wonder if its possible to use that gear sensor to over-ride the DVD so it thinks its in reverse ?????
