front disc & pads

Post  sparkey on Thu Jan 20, 2011 8:36 am

has any one fitted EBC discs & pads

had front discs skimmed b4 xmas but still not happy with them so going to replace discs & pads rang local dealer for price hope ur sitting down £749.47 + vat & fittng on top Shocked

so rang revolution & they can do EBC turbo grooved or ulitma discs & yellow stuff pads for just over £400 fitted

so thinking of going this route

Re: front disc & pads

Post  RB5 286 on Mon Feb 07, 2011 2:12 pm

just about to post up a thread and I saw this!!

been getting a funny feeling from the brakes at the front, like a kinda grinding feeling.

had a quick look thru the wheels to see the pad levels but cant tell how much meat they have left on them!!!

are these Pagid brakes from ECP good Rob?

ECP are one of my customers, we fit all their signage at every new branch they open!!! I could get some discount from them I'm sure lol

how hard is it to

a) check the pads fitted are worn?
b) change the pads
c) change the discs?

The only thing I can fault with them is they are very very dirty pads, The brake superb hot and cold and dont seem to fade out, My mate had a touch of flame and glowing discs one night trying to make them fade lol

A) its usually the inside pad that wears quickest, just take the wheel off and look into the top of the caliper.

B) change the pads, Remove wheel remove R clip from pins ontop of the calliper and knock them out, Then simply lift the pads out and slide the new ones in and assmeble in reverse order.

C) remove wheel, take two bolts that hold the brake calliper onto the hub assy, lift the calliper out of the way. Insert 2 8mm bolts into the threaded hole on the disc and screw them in to jack the disc off the hub.

Changed mine at exactly 16.5k

Went for ferodo Ds 2500 pads - a good step up performance wise with no issues from cold and not mega dusty (same as oem).

I was told that next time I would need new discs - Ian Godney on SN group buys if where I'd head....

Godspeed appears to rate the Bluestuff pads very highly. He's doing a Gb on SN £252 for the grooved discs and bluestuff pads.

I got the two piece discs and PF pads from Ian and can't fault him.

there's a small lip on the front discs about 1-1.5mm

I'd check your disc thickness as I thinks it's only 2mm wear from 28mm to a 26mm minimum. You can put new pads on old discs but if the disc is near it limit it's best to change both together. I'd check your discs as at 13K mine had started to crack.

RB

Cant remember how much - nearer £200 I think.

Tend to get what you pay for...

I dont know why peeps want to pay the least for brakes / tyres when these are the most imp safety aspect of driving ? ? ?

Crikey _ I want the best

Post  RB5 286 on Wed Feb 09, 2011 1:13 pm

there's nowt wrong with EBC red's

i ran them with EBC grooved discs on my RB5 for 40k miles and were very good, well, until i fitted these little beauty's

355mm with 6 pots

I also had AP's all round for one of my Hawkeye's
363 fronts, 335 rears

so I am not one to skimp on the important stuff

but at the moment where my job is on the brink of ending i need to watch the pennies!!!

Hey thats sometimes true ... cost doesn't always mean 'the best', but I dont want longevity< I want quality.

I want a decent compound which actually does what it says on the tin.

Maybe some of the cheaper pads do work well, but for the sake of £50 I'd rather put my life in the hands of Ferodo rather than Yingtong.

you'll find if you do some research That Pagid have been making brakes for years longer than ferodo & the fact that the pagid equiptment is of O.E SPEC speaks volumes you see....

Personally I've ran EBC & Ferodo brakes in previous imprezas.

The EBC Nearly killed me and my car they were just utter fucking rubbish, If you didnt ride the brake with your left foot first to warm them through you were never gonna stop, not sure what the new compound is like but I wont ever trust them again.

Ferodo well they may aswell have just been made of compressed grass and soil they dropped to bits causing the friction material to break off the backing plate wrecking the discs and bending the pins in the caliper. cheers

right

running out of time so I have gone for these:
http://bbs.scoobynet.com/group-buys-356/856592-grooved-326mm-2001-onwards-sti-with-free-painted-centres-94-99-pair.html

withe some kevlar pads

total £165 delivered, spoken to Ian and they'll be with me 2moro!!

i thought i'd better get the discs are the rear of the disc could be shagged !!

Rob, does the STI have wear indicator sensors? just concerned if they should as I would have expected the dash to show something if the pads are as bad as they feel!!!

No the Sti doesn't have any wear sensors fitted, the only thing on them to indicate the wear marker is a small bit of spring steel mounted to the pad which makes a horrid squealing noise when the pads are buggered Laughing
