wheels already corroding??? Empty wheels already corroding???

Post  vulnax Thu Apr 22, 2010 11:55 am

Wondered, has any one else seen some bubbling ( corrosion ? ) on the 330S 5 spoke wheels?

Got car back today from oil change / wheel bearing replacement and the dealer had washed it, and cleaned wheels, blacked tyres etc.

Now the car gets 2 bucket wash with lambswool mitt each week or two using posh shampoo, and Jeffs Werkstat prime and jett treatment every month or two.

Wheels are a bit neglected but washed with the rest of the car.

Noticed today now the ingrained dirt has been removed that one wheel seems to have bubbles or blisters along the edge of one of the spokes ... maybe be winter salt or something attacking... but until I attack the blister not sure! It isn't just a lump of road grime!

My WRX alloys are already corroding on a 59 plate car. I think that stone chips are the cause..

I'm looking for something black, 18" and shiny from work though to make her look a whole lot sexier!

Ive got no corrosion on my 330s wheels but I'm having them powder coated on Monday, I've gone for metallic silver as I don't like the original dark finish, they just look dirty all the time to me.

The people that are doing them take the tyres off, strip them back to bare then coat and lacquer them, tyres back on and balance. They're done in 1 day and they also supply a courtesy car, £250+vat.

Let you know how they turn out.

All done and they did a great job, very nice finish and shiney too! Well worth doing if your wheels are beginning to corrode.

Yeah, the RX-8's are notorious for wheel corrosion.

I had a set replaced under warranty for this.

Ok, well one of my 330s wheels had a couple of small areas of peeling laquer on the inside rim as below, my car was purchased at a year old so not sure what the previous owner used to clean them, not much or often I doubt!

Anyway spoke to my dealer who said he'd have a look at it's next service in a few weeks, told him I'd like a pair of new rims so they matched front to back on the one side, cheaky but fair I thought. At the service he checked all 4 and said they all showed signs of deteriation and he'd put a warranty claim in for a full set, I was gob smacked as I thought I'd have to fight for one new wheel, anyway a few weeks later and some extra photos to IM (the one's my dealer took were not detailed enough for IM) and 4 new wheels were ordered for me.

Got to give IM/Subaru top marks for this warranty claim as it was totally hassle free, my wheels were in pretty good shape apart from this with only one slightly scuffed so IM knew I was not just trying to get some new rims for that reason, dealer said he'd not seen this before on the 330 rims but most are filty on the inside so you'd never know.

So, for those with peeling rims, speak to your dealer!!!

Which dealer did you use, my 330s rims are bubbling around the centre badge and mounting holes. Think this is pretty much on all 4. I may have to have a trip down to Monks Heath and let them see if IM will oblige.

    How old's your 330S?

I've got something very similar on my 330S rims around the centre cap.

Car is approx 30 months old, so got 6 months before the warranty goes.

I'll take some pics tomorrow and see if my bubbling is like everybody elses.

I.M will supply a new set of rims for corrosion problems, we've done a few claims on them. make sure the replacement set has grease put on the center caps before fitting to stop them damaging the laquer

My warranty has now expired so no chance of renewing mine, think they'll get a powdercoat come the better weather.

My 330S wheels are away being powder coated at the moment, couldn't be bothered with contacting my local dealer. I have damaged one but the others are starting to bubble around the centre cap. I have got a brand new set of these rims brought off here but as Subaru only paint the face of the wheel that can be seen these wheels would be the same in 12 months, the company that its doing the Re-furb powder coat the complete wheel.
I am having them done in what they called Black Chrome which you would have a job to see a difference between that and the standard Lustric Silver, only difference being mine will be painted behind the spokes.
They will then be fitted with a set of Michelin Pilot Sport3's.
