Post  Derek FKS 85 Mon Mar 22, 2010 2:29 pm

I had PIAA driving lamps on my classic which were superb, getting my 330s with fogs on wednesday and I would like to have driving lamps again.

Anyone know if they can be converted or if there is a kit available?

    Derek.

Not that I know of. Your best bet is to find what the make and model the fogs are and then to see if the makers do a driving light version. If you find out, post up as I'd be interested as well.

The fogs are made by Koito.

    Fog light part number: 114-77828
    Housing part number: 114-20041

You could try emailing Koito and see if they do a driving light that fits that housing.

Thanks for rhat Neil, saved me a call to you!

I spoke with a very helpful gentleman in Kioto Europe just now who said that these are made in their factory in Japan, he confirmed that unless Subaru dealers had this as an option a driving lamp conversion would not be available.

He did however say that if I sent him an e-mail with exactly what I was looking for he would get it to the right person in Japan and explain to them that there appears to be a demand for a driving lamp option.

    E-mail sent and fingers crossed.

Not holding my breath Derek although I would have thought that there has to be enough demand worldwide to make it worth their while producing a driving lamp conversion. Everybody knows the fogs are next to useless and there's no point fitting them unless it's simply for looks.

There are other options. For example, Hella make 'E' marked 90mm driving lights in both high and low beam or even HID if your pockets are deep enough. The tricky bit would be making the bracketry to attach them to the rear of the bumper.

Step too far for me Neil! If they don't produce a new reflector then I'll give up but I think they would be missing a trick.

Those are just the same fogs but with different coloured lenses. A driving light requires a completely different reflector design.

Driving lights are kinda like having another set of headlights.

Thanks, Neil. I had a pair of the Hella HID 90mm P1 lamps for my classic and sold them when I ordered the Hatch. They would have fitted the covers nicely.

If you can't get a direct fit driving lamp then I think the best way to go would be with HID kit in the mainbeam. I just think that it would be a lot of work and even with good lamps they're too low to give good coverage.

My thoughts exactly. I came across a post on scoobymods earlier today where the guy had fitted Hella 90mm lamps (non HID) to his hawkeye and I have to say I wasn't overly impressed with the results. As you pointed out, probably too low down to be fully effective - although I dare say HID would have seen better results but at circa £600, no thanks!

I got a very polite reply from the chap at Kioto saying that there is no conversion kit and no plans to produce one. Well, we tried.

It was worth asking the question, but no real surprise with their response unfortunately.

So if you want to do it it's back to Hella or similar. You can get the non HID Hellas for circa £100 a pair. Can't see it being that difficult to make brackets to fit them. I know I said earlier that I wasn't that impressed with them fitted to a hawkeye but they were still a lot more effective than the OEM fogs.

Here's a little gif animation of the non HID 90mm Hellas on that hawkeye. The owner thinks he's maybe aligned them a little low.

H9 = Hellas, HID = Stock dipped, 9011 = Full beam fitted with Toshiba 9011 HIR bulbs.

Don't think it's worth the trouble Neil, might get myself a bonnet lamp pod!
