    Grimmspeed Air/Oil separator

    Post  Paul666 on Mon May 30, 2011 6:58 pm

    Found this:

    http://www.grimmspeed.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=60_33_36_102&products_id=191

Looks like a very nice bit of kit, if it works. Anybody know of any problem or possible issues with it?

    Thanks,
    Paul.

Granted it looks a nice piece of kit but I have a concern.

I personally run a baffle controlled catch tank on mine and from what it collects I would not want that going back into the sump to be re-used, theres quite allot of moisture collected in the tank and to me thats just going to mix with the engine oil and make one hell of a mess.

maybe due to our damp climate the grimspeed wont function as well as it would in the states were its warm and dry. Just a thought

Is yours vented to atmo or inlet? The Crawford ones are water heated now to drive off moisture, which is then sucked back in to the inlet. Just thinking that with this sitting on top of the engine, warmed from below that it would just suck the moisture straight back to the inlet?

Vented to atmosphere, The inlet's are blanked off so just has pure clean uncontaminated air in the induction system.

Sounds to me like it is just going to suck the moisture back into the induction circuit like you said

Just thinking if that's good or bad. Water injection has been done for years without issues, not the same but still moisture passing through the combustion chamber, whatever it's going to be a vapour most the way through the exhaust.

You've got a point with the water injection but thats clean water Laughing not something that has been forced out of the engine with all other gases from the crankcase, surly cant do it any good. to a certain extent the pcv should do this anyhow if it functions correctly but in a different manner as its not going through the intercooler.

My pcv is still active for off boost, but when on boost is closed and all the nastyness is forced into the catchcan out of harms way.

So you've got all the vents to the catch can, heads and crankcase leaving the vent that tees off the crankcase to the throttle body still in place? Where is the PCV, isn't it the grey thing with the electrical plug on the intake pipe just by the dump valve port? Doesn't that open under load to draw in to the inlet pipe and close to vent to the throttle body when it's under vacuum, i.e. when throttle is closed? If the item on the intake hose isn't that then what is it?

yes there all vented to the catch tank with the pcv still in place. The pcv is open when on vacuum and cruising along to draw out gasses from the crankcase but under boost conditions where it counts the pcv is slammed shut and all the vents go direct into the catch tank so therefore makes the intake system full of clean fresh un contaminated air.

The pcv valve is under the throttle body tucked away and just has a small pipe from the crankcase to it no electric required

    Thanks for that Rob.

What is the thing on the intake pipe from the crankcase breather that has the electrical plug then?

    Paul.

I've just ordered an air/oil separator from Litchfield. Its their own design. I'll keep you posted.
